Why we're called Reindeer Sky

The fox that set fire to the snow

"A fire fox raced across the fells so fast, its tail brushed sparks into the night sky."

Long before satellite forecasts, Finnish storytellers already had their own explanation for the lights overhead — a fire fox, tulikettu, running just out of sight.

That old story is where the Finnish word for the aurora comes from: revontulet, literally "fox fires." We didn't pick our name to sound clever — we picked it because every tour still starts the same way that story did: watching the sky, waiting for the fox to run.

Your guide grew up driving these roads long before this tour existed, and knows exactly which dark corner of Rovaniemi gives the fox the best stage on any given night.

The night, step by step

What actually happens

01

Pickup

Collected from your Rovaniemi accommodation, typically between 6–9pm depending on the month and darkness.

02

The hunt

We check live aurora and cloud forecasts together and drive to whichever dark, clear spot gives you the best chance that night — never a fixed route.

03

The watch

Hot drinks in hand, eyes on the open sky. We wait and watch, and I'll point out what's building as the lights (hopefully) move.

04

Return

Back to your accommodation after 4–6 hours, whether the sky delivered or just teased us.

Note: professional photography service isn't offered yet — bring your own camera or phone, and I'm happy to help you find the right settings on-site.

Your guide

Just me — no call center, no big fleet

I'm Janne, based in Rovaniemi. I already spend my nights driving these roads, and starting this autumn I'm opening a few of them up to visitors who want more than a seat on a shared minibus.

There's no dispatch office, no rotating roster of guides — if you book with Reindeer Sky Tours, I'm the one picking you up, driving, and standing next to you under the sky.

This is a new tour for the 2026 season. What that means for you: closer attention, honest expectations, and a fixed launch price instead of a "premium" markup for a brand name.

New tour, straightforward promise

Before you book

Questions people ask

Do you guarantee we'll see the northern lights?

No honest guide can guarantee a natural phenomenon — but you're not carrying that risk. We only go out when there's a realistic chance, and if the lights don't show anyway, you get a full refund.

What should we wear?

Warm layers, a windproof outer layer, and proper winter boots. We wait outside for long stretches, so warm hands and feet matter more than a fancy jacket.

What happens if it's cloudy or the forecast is poor?

The decision to go is based on that night's realistic aurora chance. If it's not looking possible, the tour doesn't run — you get a full refund, or we can move your booking to another night if you'd rather try again. If we do go out and the lights still don't show, you get a full refund either way.

Where do you pick us up?

From your Rovaniemi accommodation, or a central meeting point — confirmed with you by email after booking.

Can we reschedule or cancel?

If we cancel because conditions rule out any real chance, you choose: full refund, or move to another night. If you personally need to cancel for your own reasons, get in touch and we'll do our best to find a solution.

Is this tour really private?

Yes. The vehicle and guide are booked for your group only, up to six guests. Bookings are never combined with other guests.
